Today I want to introduce you to 2 people.

"John" is a member of an online game you play where participation and engagement are very important to the team's success.  He hasn't been active and doesn't contribute to the team.

"Jane" is also a member of the above-mentioned game.  Like "John," she's very inactive and doesn't contribute to the team/game.

There are 50 players on a team - so having two inactive players affects 4% of your team.  There's a player chat you're able to see - so you might see things like "Give 'em the boot!", "Tell them to get cookin' or get out of the kitchen!" and other comments.  Other team members see this and will either join in or put those complaining in their place.

Many times, inactive teammates are just that.  Other times, they have situations you know nothing about that explain why they're inactive.

In the case of "John," he has been gone from the game for a long period of time.  Why?  He's been deployed and hasn't had access to the Internet.

"Jane" has gone from spouse to spouse/caregiver.  Her husband had a Brain Injury they've been dealing with.

The team members calling for their dismissal felt like total jerks when they found out why they'd been away!

When you put blinders on and focus on yourself - you don't have time to worry about the behavior of others.  It doesn't matter if their actions fit your expectations - because you have your own actions to monitor.

Now keep in mind - we're talking about a game here.  Is it important to have as many players dialed in for success?  Yes!  Is it the end of the world if you hold the positions of a few players that are going through some stuff?  No!  If this were real life and those team members were causing the bottom line to dip or something else negative in nature - you might have to take different actions.

Although it comes in a long format, the moral of all this is to focus on you!  Don't worry about what others are doing.  Especially if you don't know the full story.
